In the mid-1970s, a traveler smuggled Pinot Noir cuttings—believed to be from Burgundy’s famed Domaine de la Romanée-Conti—into New Zealand inside a gumboot. Customs officer Malcolm Abel intercepted the vines but saved them through quarantine, later passing cuttings to Ata Rangi winemaker Clive Paton in 1980. Today, this "Abel/Gumboot clone" accounts for up to 20% of New Zealand's Pinot Noir plantings, celebrated for its rich, complex profile. In New Zealand, this finicky grape has discovered a spectacular southern sanctuary where environment, soil, and human skill align in perfect harmony.
