Craggy Range is an iconic New Zealand winery set in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in Hawke’s Bay.
Established in 1998 by the Peabody family, the winery quickly became synonymous with wines of quality. Unique parcels of land were chosen in Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough, vineyards were planted with painstaking care, with the goal to produce wines that are a pure expression of their place.
The flagship vineyard is in the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district. This is an ancient river bed of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke’s Bay, where the climate is one of the warmest in New Zealand. The stony and sandy alluvial soils absorb heat during the day, radiating warmth at night to allow grapes to reach maximum ripeness. High quality red wines – Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are produced.
A spectacular piece of farmland on Te Muna Road Martinborough. was the site of the second vineyard. Its two distinct terraces meant that the vineyard could produce two varietals: the higher comprising of very old rocky clay-infused soils perfect for Pinot Noir; and the lower terrace of younger gravelly soils interleaved with limestone allowing for a unique style of aromatic, minerally Sauvignon Blanc.
