Gimblett Gravels is a designation encompassing a centuries old dried river bed in Hawke’s Bay that is believed to be the first in the New World where the ultimate boundary is defined by a distinct soil type. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s.

Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2016

Why we like it…

Black cherries and spice – a delicious expression of Syrah from a cooler climate, similar in style to the Northern Rhône.  Also works well with barbecued meats and with tomato-based dishes such as pizza or ragu.

93 points ‘A polished Syrah with barrel-derived cedar notes combining with ripe black cherry fruits, integrated black pepper spice and a hint of smoky bacon. It’s an elegant, mid-weight style that is seamless in the mouth. It’s flush of fresh acidity on the finish and adolescent, grainy tannins that need time in bottle.’
