Sustainability

Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand is widely recognised as a world-leading sustainability programme. Established in 1997, it was the first national sustainability programme in the global wine industry.

To New Zealand’s winemakers and grape growers, sustainability means delivering excellent wine to consumers while helping the natural environment, local businesses and the communities involved.

It is a holistic approach to winegrowing and sets out guidelines for vineyard management practices, and encompasses Kaitiakitanga – the Māori concept of guardianship and protection of the environment.

Today 98% of wine production follows the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand guidelines, protecting the land that creates such exceptional wine.
